Some things crossed over from one to the other \u2013 his fierce intelligence and wit, his love of film and of his three young sons, also the characteristic elegance of his writing. But other parts of the former life were irretrievably lost, a successful career as a screenwriter (<em>Good<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Liability<\/em>), for instance. In\u00a0<em>Lobster<\/em>, he writes about the sense of loss with poignancy and optimism, saying he can barely remember \u201cwhat [life] was like before the stroke. So this is the new normal. The strange thing is that I\u2019m happier now than I was pre-stroke. Why that is, I don\u2019t really know. But I think it\u2019s to do with living each day just for the day.\u201d In fact, Wrathall is a genius at remembering and early sections of this book capture his almost Wordsworthian joy (and Joy Division) at being young in the dawn of the 1980s.
